The University of Iowa welcomes applications for the Between the Lines International Writing Programme in 2021.
Since 2008, Between the Lines (BTL) has welcomed young writers at the University of Iowa for a cultural exchange program that concentrates on the art and skill of creative writing. Partakers, aged 15-18, rendezvous in Iowa City for a rigorous two-week session. During the session, they reside in campus dorms and spend their days in creative writing seminars and international literature workshops designed to widen their literary horizons and expand their empathy for and comprehension of one another’s identities and stories.
BTL provides two summer sessions—Between the Lines: Peace and the Writing Experience (for candidates from the U.S. and 28 nations) & Between the Lines: Identity and Belonging (for candidates from the U.S. only).
With professional U.S. and foreign writers as their teachers, partakers widen their literary horizons, expand their empathy and their comprehension of one another’s cultures, and develop their communication skills. All programming is carried out in English.
Between the Lines: Peace and the Writing Experience is funded via a collaborative agreement with the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the United States State Department. Programming partners comprise the University of Iowa, Prairie Lights Bookstore, and other local clusters and university departments.
