Find out what visa you require to study in Denmark

The document that permits foreign nationals to study in Denmark is referred to as “residence permit” instead of “student visa”. Remember this even if we use the terms interchangeably in this post. Now, who needs a residence permit?

  • EU/EEA and Switzerland nationals have to put in for an EU residence document, not a residence permit
  • Non-EU/EEA and Switzerland citizens have to apply for the residence permit

When and where to apply for the Denmark Student Visa?

You can make an application for the residence permit through the official New to Denmark website.

The best time to begin application for your residence permit is three months before your arrival date. Seeing how some credentials need to be signed, sealed, delivered, or biometrics required to be submitted, the overall length and processing times may differ based on your nationality.

For example, it may take 60 days for your details to be processed if you’re from:

  • India
  • the U.S.
  • Canada
  • Iran
  • Indonesia
  • Egypt
  • Bangladesh
  • Philippines

On the other hand, some candidates might have to wait for up to 6 months if they’re from:

  • Nigeria
  • Pakistan
  • Kenya
  • Ghana

Also, since we’re talking durations: note that your Denmark Student Visa is valid for the duration of your program, so there won’t be surprised visits to the city hall.
