Job Title: Deputy Security Adviser, P4

  • Advises to and supports the Designated Official and/or Head of Mission and/or security focal points and/or agencies of the United Nations Security Management System (UNSMS).
  • Collates and evaluates security management documents for the specified area of responsibility, comprising all aspects related to elaboration, growth, execution, and updating of the documents.
  • Leads and directs security operations.
  • Monitors the implementation of safety and security policies of the UNSMS.
  • Provides support to UNSMS organizations in the establishment and maintenance of a functioning Emergency Communication System.
  • Assists in the response to crisis events and security incidents.
  • Develops, manages, reviews or supports extra-budgetary funded security projects.
  • Develops, reviews data and provides inputs for Division reporting.
  • Identifies and promotes best practices.
  • Acts as Chief Security Adviser in the absence of the CSA as required.
  • Performs any other duties as may be assigned.


  • Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in security management, business administration, political/social science, psychology, criminal justice, law, international relations or a related field is required.
  • A bachelor’s university degree in addition to two years of qualifying experience may be accepted in place of the advanced university degree. A bachelor university degree may be replaced with a diploma from a police or military education institution, college or academy gotten over a minimum of a three-year length of time.

Work Experience:

  • A minimum of seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in security, risk or disaster or emergency management in the public or private service areas, such as national security, military or police, or in a corporate environment is required.
  • Of these, a minimum of 2 years of international experience in security management systems is required.
  • Two (2) years of international experience in security operations is also required.
  • Management experience in the public, private or corporate sectors is required.

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is desirable.
